About Detained International

Detained International is a legal advocacy NGO, focusing on the protection and promotion of justice and human rights in the UAE, wider Middle East and the developing world. We provide pro bono legal counselling to victims of injustice and other human rights violations, seeking recourse to international law mechanisms. We identify, alert and resolve human rights violations.

Each year, Detained International and the Detained Group publishes reports and briefings on specific cases of injustice and human rights conditions in the UAE and the wider Middle East, generating extensive coverage in local and international media which often sees the release of victims of injustice or an end to human rights abuses.

The leverage our high-profile campaigns bring, enables Detained International to meet with governments, the United Nations, regional groups like the African Union and the European Union, financial institutions, and corporations to press for changes in policy and practice that promote human rights and justice around the world.

Our team consists of human rights professionals including country experts, lawyers, journalists, and academics of diverse backgrounds and nationalities. Established in 2016, the Detained Group is known for its accurate fact-finding, impartial reporting, effective use of media, and targeted advocacy, often in partnership with local and international human rights groups.

We believe that justice and human rights belong to all and should be reserved only for those that can afford legal representation. As a not for profit, we provide all our casework advice pro-bono. We are funded by a combination of charitable grants and donations. We do not receive core funding from any one government and are not paid for any of the assistance we provide. Detained International is governed by a board of volunteer trustees, responsible for the charity’s strategic direction and financial management.
